JOB TITLE: Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse

JOB SUMMARY: The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse (PMHN) is a professional nurse who provides skilled psychiatric and medical nursing care to patients diagnosed with a primary or secondary mental disorder. The PMHN seeks to promote the optimal level of well being for the patient and family by identifying risk factors and problem areas, and by the application of counter-measures to reduce or resolve them.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Willingness to understand, support and implement in practice, the philosophy, objectives and policies of the Agency.
  • Affirms a philosophy of nursing which stresses nursing process, professional accountability and professional growth.
  • Knowledge of current professional nursing practice applicable to the care of assigned patients.
  • Skill in the application of nursing process and current nursing techniques to meet patient and family needs.
  • Ability to set priorities, problem solve and intervene in crises.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Education and Experience:
  • Meets qualifications of the CHN job descriptions.
  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing with, BSN and one year of related work experience in an active treatment program for adult or geriatric patients in a psychiatric setting; or,
  • Diploma or AD degree and two years of related work experience in an active treatment program for adult or geriatric patients in psychiatric health care setting.
  • ANA certification in Psychiatric or Community Health Nursing (preferred);
  • Other qualifications may be considered on an individual basis.
